Fun Family Road Trip: Games and Activities for the Journey

By Travel Tangent Mar 20, 2023

As the summer season approaches, many families start planning their much-awaited road trips. There’s something about hitting the open road with your loved ones that brings a sense of adventure and bonding. However, long hours in the car can sometimes lead to boredom and restlessness. That’s where games and activities come in to make the journey more enjoyable and memorable. In this blog post, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite family road trip games and activities that are not only entertaining but also promote interaction and laughter among everyone in the car.

1. License Plate Game:
The license plate game is a classic that never fails to engage everyone on the road trip. Give each family member a pen and a small notebook. The objective is to spot license plates from different states and write them down. You can even assign points to each state, adding a sense of competition and excitement to the game. Make sure to celebrate every time someone spots a rare or unique license plate!

2. I Spy:
“I spy with my little eye…” This evergreen game is perfect for keeping everyone entertained during a long drive. One person starts by saying “I spy something (insert color or shape),” and the others take turns guessing what the person spotted. It not only sharpens observation skills but also sparks friendly competition and laughter as everyone tries to crack the riddles.

3. 20 Questions:
Who doesn’t love a good guessing game? 20 Questions is a classic that requires minimal equipment and can keep the whole family engaged for hours. One person thinks of an object, person, or place, and the others have 20 questions to guess what it is. The questions must be answered with a simple “yes” or “no.” This game not only stimulates critical thinking but also encourages creativity as everyone tries to come up with clever, unexpected clues.

4. Road Trip Bingo:
Create personalized road trip bingo cards before your journey, filled with various items that you might spot along the way—such as cows, road signs, or even specific landmarks. Each person can have their own bingo card or play as a team. Whenever someone spots an item on their card, they mark it off. The first person to mark off all the items in a row, column, or diagonal shouts “Bingo!” This game adds an element of friendly competition and excitement, making the journey more enjoyable.

5. Karaoke and Sing-Alongs:
Road trips are the perfect time to unleash your inner superstar! Create a playlist of all your family’s favorite songs and sing your hearts out. Whether it’s a powerful ballad or an upbeat pop hit, singing together not only makes the journey fly by but also creates lasting memories. Don’t be shy, encourage everyone to join in and have a blast. Bonus points if you capture these musical moments on camera!

6. Audiobooks and Podcasts:
If your family enjoys storytelling or learning something new, consider downloading audiobooks or podcasts for the road trip. Choose a book or podcast that appeals to everyone’s interests and let the journey become an opportunity for shared intellectual stimulation. From thrilling mysteries to historical documentaries, there is an abundance of options available for all ages and tastes.

7. Geography Trivia:
Turn your road trip into a geography lesson with a fun trivia game. Come prepared with a list of questions about different states, capitals, landmarks, or even famous landmarks from around the world. Ask each family member a question, and reward them with points for correct answers. Not only will everyone learn something new, but it will also spark interesting conversations about various places.

8. Mad Libs:
Remember those hilarious fill-in-the-blank stories from your childhood? Mad Libs are a great way to bring out the laughs and encourage creativity during a road trip. Bring along a Mad Libs book or print out some sheets from the internet. One person asks the others for specific types of words (adjective, noun, verb, etc.), and fills them into the story without revealing its context. Once all the blanks are filled, the person reads the story aloud, leading to uncontrollable laughter and ridiculous tales.

Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination when it comes to road trips. By incorporating these games and activities, you can create a fun-filled atmosphere that will have your family reminiscing about the memories made on the road for years to come. So, pack up the car, put on your seat belts, and get ready for an exciting adventure with your loved ones. Bon voyage!
